John S. Jones

John Sills Jones (born February 12, 1836 in Champaign County , Ohio , †  April 11, 1903 in Delaware , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1877 and 1879 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Jones attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1855 at Ohio Wesleyan University in the city of Delaware. After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1857, he began to work in this profession in Delaware. In 1860 and 1861 he was a prosecutor in Delaware County there . During the civil war he served as an officer in various units in the Union Army . He rose to the rank of colonel. He was later promoted to Brevet Brigadier General. After the war he continued his legal practice. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1866 he was mayor of the city of Delaware. From 1866 to 1872 he served again as a prosecutor in Delaware County.

In the congressional election of 1876 Jones was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the ninth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat Earley F. Poppleton on March 4, 1877 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1878, he could only complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1879 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, Jones returned to practice as a lawyer. From 1879 to 1884 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . He died on April 11, 1903 in Delaware, where he was also buried.
