Champaign County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Urbana .

The county is located in west-central Ohio and has an area of 1,113 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Logan County , Union County , Madison County , Clark County , Miami County, and Shelby County .
history
Champaign County was formed on February 20, 1805 from parts of Franklin County and Greene County. It was named after the French Champagne countryside because the county also has a flat landscape.

According to the 2000 census , there were 38,890 people in 14,952 households and 10,870 families in Champaign County. The population density was 35 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.73 percent white , 2.30 percent African American , 0.31 percent American Indian , 0.25 percent Asian American , 0.02 percent Pacific islander and 0.31 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.08 percent were descended from two or more races . 0.69 percent of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .
Of the 14,952 households, 34.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.7 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers, 27.3 percent were non-families, 23.5 percent were single households and 9.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.01.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 43,139 , and the median income for a family is $ 50,430. Males had a median income of $ 38,265 versus $ 26,241 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,542. 5.1 percent of families and 7.6 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 9.9 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 7.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
