Allen County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is the city of Lima , named after the capital of Peru .

The county is located in northwest Ohio, about 25 miles to the west of the Indiana border, and covers an area of ​​1,054 square kilometers, of which six square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Putnam County , Hancock County , Hardin County , Auglaize County, and Van Wert County .

history

Allen County was formed on April 1, 1820 from parts of Shelby County. It was named after Ethan Allen , leader of the Green Mountain Boys , a paramilitary infantry unit in the American War of Independence, or after John Allen , a colonel in the British-American War of 1812–1814.

One place in the county has National Historic Landmark status , the Miami and Erie Canal Deep Cut . 30 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 6, 2018).

Allen County's population was 108,473 as of the 2000 census . 6,113 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 40,646 households and 28,208 families. For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.9 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 98.0 men statistically.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,048 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,723. Males had a median income of $ 35,546 versus $ 23,537 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,511. 9.6 percent of families and 12.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. 17.0 percent of these were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
