Harrison County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Cadiz .
geography
The county is located almost in the far east of Ohio, about 15 miles from the West Virginia border, and covers an area of 1,064 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Carroll County , Jefferson County , Belmont County , Guernsey County, and Tuscarawas County . Bowerston belongs to the county .
history
Harrison County was formed on January 2, 1813 from parts of Jefferson County and Tuscarawas County. It was named after William H. Harrison , a general in the British-American War from 1812-1814, governor of the Indiana Territory and later ninth President of the United States .
Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 19, 2018).

Harrison County had a population of 15,856 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 271 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 6,398 households and 4,516 families. The population density was 15 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.49 percent white, 2.19 percent African American, 0.08 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.09 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.03 percent were descended from two or more races. 0.37 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,398 households, 29.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.5 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers, 29.4 percent were non-families, 25.6 percent were single households and 13.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 6.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 89.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,318 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,646. Males had a median income of $ 30,485 versus $ 18,813 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,479. 13.3 percent of the population and 11.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 17.5 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
