Cadiz, Ohio is a city in Harrison County , the administrative seat of which it is, in the state of Ohio , USA .

history

The settlement of Cadiz was founded in 1803 and got its name from the numerous Spanish settlers after the Spanish Atlantic port city of Cádiz in Andalusia . In 1813 it became the county seat of Harrison County. In 1846 the place had 1028 inhabitants, around 1880 there were 2000 and today there are over 3300 (2012). Citizens of Spanish origin make up only 3.5% of the population today.

The actor Clark Gable was born in Cadiz in 1901.

economy

The settlement was initially oriented towards agriculture. In 1889 a small oil field was developed. Throughout the 20th century, coal mining ensured the town's main economic function.

Since 2012, natural gas conveyed that a pipeline up to Mont Belvieu in Texas is headed.

traffic

In terms of traffic, Cadiz is accessible to Interstate 70 , which runs just under 15 miles south . A single-track railway line runs east of the village, a branch line that ends on the southern edge of the village.
