Mahoning County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is in Youngstown .

The county is located in northeast Ohio, bordering Pennsylvania and has an area of ​​1,097 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by Trumbull County , Mercer County, Pennsylvania, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania, Columbiana County , Stark County, and Portage County .

history

Mahoning County was formed on February 16, 1846 from parts of Columbiana County and Trumbull County. It was named after a Delaware expression , which means something like at the salt blocks (salt licks).

The county has a National Historic Landmark , the William H. McGuffey Boyhood Home Site . 73 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 11, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Mahoning County had 257,555 people in 102,587 households and 68,835 families. The population density was 239 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.04 percent white, 15.87 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.47 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.03 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.38 percent were descended from two or more races.
