The county is located slightly northwest of the geographic center of Ohio and has an area of ​​1047 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Crawford County , Morrow County , Delaware County , Union County , Hardin County, and Wyandot Counties .

history

Marion County was formed on February 12, 1820 from parts of Delaware County. It was named after Francis Marion , a lieutenant colonel and later brigadier general in the South Carolina militia in the American Revolutionary War .

The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Warren G. Harding Home , the residence of former President Warren G. Harding . 15 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 11, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Marion County had 66,217 people in 24,578 households and 17,253 families. The population density was 63 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.10 percent white, 5.75 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.52 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.49 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.95 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.09 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.98 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.5 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 106.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 107.1 men statistically.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 38,709 , and the median income for a family was $ 45,297. Males had a median income of $ 33,179 versus $ 23,586 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,255. 7.4 percent of families and 9.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 13.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 5.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
