The Belmont County is a county in the US state of Ohio . At the 2010 census , the county had 70,400 people and a population density of 50.6 people per square kilometer. The county seat is St. Clairsville .
geography
The county is located in east Ohio and is separated from West Virginia by the Ohio River . It has an area of 1,402 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers are water. The following counties border Belmont County:

history
Belmont County was formed on September 7, 1801 from parts of Jefferson County and Washington County. It was named after the French expression for beautiful mountain .
One place in the county has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the tugboat Donald B. 24 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 6, 2018).

The racial the population was composed of 94.0 percent white, 4.0 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.3 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.6 percent of the population.
