Greene County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Xenia .

The county is located in the central southwest of Ohio and has an area of ​​1078 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Clark County , Madison County , Fayette County , Clinton County , Warren County, and Montgomery Counties .

history

Greene County was formed on March 24, 1803 from parts of Hamilton County and Ross County. It was named after Nathanael Greene , who was the most important American general after George Washington during the American Revolutionary War .

In the county is a National Historical Park , the Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park . Two locations have National Historic Landmark status , the Huffman Prairie Flying Field and the Colonel Charles Young House . 41 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 5, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Greene County had 147,886 people in 55,312 households and 39,160 families. The population density was 138 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.24 percent white, 6.37 percent African American, 0.29 percent Native American, 2.03 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.38 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.66 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.23 percent of the population.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.9 percent of residents under the age of 18, 13.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 11.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 91.4 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 48,656 , and the median income for a family is $ 57,954. Males had a median income of $ 42,338 versus $ 28,457 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,057. 5.2 percent of families and 8.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line. 8.7 percent of these were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 6.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
