Ross County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Chillicothe .

The county is located in south-central Ohio and has an area of 1795 square kilometers, of which twelve square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Pickaway County , Hocking County , Vinton County , Jackson County , Pike County , Highland County, and Fayette Counties .
history
Ross County was formed on August 20, 1798 from parts of Adams County and Washington County. It was named after James Ross , a Pennsylvania politician and senator .
There is a national historical park in the county , the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park . Two locations have National Historic Landmark status , the Adena Mansion and the Hopeton Earthworks . 43 structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 5, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Ross County had 73,345 people in 27,136 households and 19,185 families. The population density was 41 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.74 percent white, 6.20 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.35 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.19 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.20 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.58 percent of the population.
Of the 27,136 households, 32.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.1 percent were single mothers, 29.3 percent were non-families, 24.9 percent were single households and 10.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 108.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 109.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,117 , and the median income for a family is $ 43,241. Males had a median income of $ 35,892 versus $ 23,399 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,569. 9.1 percent of families and 12.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 15.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 10.2 percent were people over 65 years of age.
