Ross County (officially: Ross County Football Club ) is a professional football club based in Dingwall , Scotland .

history

The Ross County Football Club was founded in 1929. For a long time the club played in the Highland Football League , in which it was three times champion. Nationwide, the club was best known for its cup games, in which it often defeated higher-class teams.

In January 1994 Ross County was elected together with Inverness CT in the Scottish league system and began in the fourth-rate third division . The club played in the first few years for promotion, which was just missed as third or fourth in the table. In the 1998/99 season succeeded with the first place in the table of promotion to the second division . As third in the table in the following year , the club made further promotion to the First Division .

Winning the Scottish League Challenge Cup on penalties against FC Clyde in November 2006 marked the first national victory. In the same season, the Staggies were bottom of the table in the First Division and were relegated to the Second Division.

Ross County won the championship in the second division and direct promotion to the first division the following season .

On the final day of the 2008/09 season, Ross County secured relegation with a 2-0 win over Greenock Morton . At the Scottish FA Cup 2009/10 Ross County came to the final, but lost there 3-0 to Dundee United .

In May 2012, Ross County was promoted to the Scottish Premier League (SPL), the highest league in Scotland. In the 2012/13 season, the club secured relegation as fifth in the table. Ross County remained in the SPL for the next two years. The club finished the 2013/14 season in seventh place and the 2014/15 season in ninth place. Ross County won the Scottish League Cup in the 2015/16 season . In the semi-finals they surprisingly beat Celtic Glasgow 3-1 and defeated the second division Hibernian Edinburgh 2-1 in the final .

Due to the geographical proximity to the city of Inverness, there is a rivalry with the football club Inverness Caledonian Thistle .
