Hardin County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Kenton .

The county is located in central northwest Ohio and has an area of ​​1,219 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Hancock County , Wyandot County , Marion County , Union County , Logan County , Auglaize County, and Allen County .

history

Hardin County was formed from parts of Logan County on February 12, 1820 and finally organized in 1833. It was named after John Hardin , an officer in the Continental Army in the American War of Independence .

Seven structures and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of April 19, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Hardin County had 31,945 people in 11,963 households and 8,134 families. The population density was 26 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.54 percent white, 0.70 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.43 percent Asian and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.85 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.78 percent of the population.

Of the 11,963 households, 31.4 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 55.0 percent were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers, 32.0 percent were non-families, 26.5 percent were single households, and 10.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.03.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.3 percent of residents under the age of 18, 15.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 21.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.7 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 34,440 , and the median income for a family is $ 42,395. Males had a median income of $ 33,393 versus $ 21,695 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,200. 8.9 percent of families and 13.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 15.2 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 11.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.
