Vinton County is a county in the US state of Ohio of the United States . The county seat is McArthur .

The county is located in south-central Ohio and has an area of ​​1075 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by Hocking County , Athens County , Meigs County , Gallia County , Jackson County, and Ross County .

history

Vinton County was formed on March 23, 1850 from parts of Athens, Gallia, Hocking, Jackson and Ross Counties. It was named after Samuel Finley Vinton , a politician and multiple member of the House of Representatives .

Ten buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 19, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Vinton County had 12,806 people in 4,892 households and 3,551 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.08 percent white, 0.35 percent African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian and 0.08 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.95 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.47 percent of the population.

Of the 4892 households, 34.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.2 percent were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers, 27.4 percent were non-families, 23.6 percent were single households and 9.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.04.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 26.9 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 12.1 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 99.1 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 95.5 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,465 , and the median income for a family is $ 34,371. Males had a median income of $ 30,936 versus $ 21,257 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,731. 15.1 percent of families and 20.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 27.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 13.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
