McArthur is a village in Vinton County , Ohio , United States . McArthur had 1,888 inhabitants according to the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Vinton County.

history

McArthur's history dates back to 1815 when Joel Sage settled here and opened an inn. The settlement was initially named after Ohio's governor Duncan McArthur McArthurstown by the residents . From 1851 the place is only called McArthur . Despite the surrounding coal and iron ore deposits as well as the operating railroad, McArthur developed very slowly. In 1850, 424 people lived here and in 1890 only 888 people. After all, McArthur had a bank, three newspapers, and four churches in 1888. At that time, the majority of the population lived from retail trade or working in mines . Although it did not increase significantly in the 20th century, it was the largest town in Vinton County in 2000 with a population of 1,888. About a sixth of the county's population lived in McArthur in 2000. The economic basis of most of the inhabitants today is the supply of goods and services for agriculture.
