history

Masury is named after Frederick Masury who founded an explosives factory , the Masurite Company, in the southwest of Brookfield Township in 1903 . Masury was a chemist at DuPont when he invented an explosive that he believed was much safer than the dynamite used at the time . He started his company here because the coal companies and quarries in Ohio ensured increased sales of his explosives. A settlement soon formed around the complex. The factory closed in 1911 because the ammonium nitrate- based explosives were replaced by others.

On May 31, 1985, a tornado almost completely destroyed the southern industrial area of Masury. The hurricane had a strength of F5 on the Fujita scale , which means a speed of 400 to 500 km / h. It came from the west, where it had hit Newton Falls , Lordstown , Niles and Hubbard , swept south of Masury and caused the greatest destruction in neighboring Wheatland , Pennsylvania , where numerous factories were destroyed. A woman was killed in Masury, a total of 88 people, 65 of whom died in Pennsylvania.
