Morgan County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is McConnelsville .

The county is located in southwest Ohio, about 60 km from the West Virginia border, and has an area of ​​1,093 square kilometers, of which 11 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Muskingum County , Noble County , Washington County , Athens County, and Perry County .

history

Morgan County was formed on December 29, 1817 from parts of Guernsey, Muskingum and Washington Counties and finally organized in 1819. It was named after Daniel Morgan , a member of the House of Representatives for Virginia , battlefield tactician and a general in the American Revolutionary War .

Six buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 16, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Morgan County had 14,897 people in 5,890 households and 4,176 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 93.66 percent white, 3.41 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian and 0.26 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.24 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.41 percent of the population.

Of the 5,890 households, 30.9 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.9 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, 29.1 percent were non-families, 25.5 percent were single households, and 12.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.98 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.3 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 96.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.9 men.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 28,868 , and the median income for a family was $ 34,973. Males had a median income of $ 30,411 versus $ 21,039 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,967. 15.7 percent of families and 18.4 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 25.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
