Meigs County is a county in the state of Ohio in the United States . The county seat is Pomeroy .

The county is located in southern Ohio, bordering West Virginia and has an area of 1,120 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Athens County , Wood County, West Virginia, Jackson County (West Virginia), Mason County (West Virginia), Gallia County, and Vinton County .
history
Meigs County was formed on January 21, 1819 from parts of Athens County and the defunct Gallatin County. It was named after Return Jonathan Meigs, Jr. , the fourth governor of Ohio and the eighth postmaster general at the time the county was founded.
Ten buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of May 11, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Meigs County had 23,072 people in 9,234 households and 6,574 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.73 percent white, 0.69 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.10 percent Asian and 0.25 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.96 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.60 percent of the population.
Of the 9,234 households, 31.2 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 56.9 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, 28.8 percent were non-families, 25.0 percent were single households, and 11.7 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.94.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.9 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.2 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.8 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 27,287 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,071. Males had a median income of $ 30,821 versus $ 19,621 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,848. 14.3 percent of families and 19.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 26.3 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.5 percent were people over 65 years of age.
