Jackson County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 29,211 residents and a population density of 24.2 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Ripley .

The county is located to the west of West Virginia, borders Ohio to the northwest , the border being formed by the Ohio River , and covers an area of 1206 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Wood County , Wirt County , Roane County , Kanawha County , Putnam County , Mason County, and Meigs County, Ohio.

Jackson County was formed on March 1, 1831 from parts of Kanawha County, Mason County and Wood County. It was named after Andrew Jackson , the seventh President of the United States.

Jackson County had a population of 28,000 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 328 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 11,061 households and 8,207 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.75 percent white, 0.08 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.62 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.29 percent of the population.
Of the 11,061 households, 31.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 61.6 percent were married couples living together, 9.4 percent were single mothers, 25.8 percent were non-families, 22.7 percent were single households and 10.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 91.4 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,434 , and the median income for a family is $ 38,021. Males had a median income of $ 32,991 versus $ 20,253 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,205. 12.2 percent of families and 15.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line. These included 21.6 percent of children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.0 percent of people aged 65 and over.
