Calhoun County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Grantsville .

The county is located slightly northwest of the geographic center of West Virginia and covers an area of ​​727 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Ritchie County , Gilmer County , Braxton County , Clay County , Roane County, and Wirt Counties .

history

Calhoun County was formed on March 5, 1856 from parts of Gilmer County. It was named after John C. Calhoun , the seventh Vice President of the United States from 1825 to 1832 under Presidents John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson and a longtime US Senator .
