Morgan County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Bath, West Virginia .

The county is located in the uppermost northeast of West Virginia, borders Maryland , southern Virginia and has an area of 593 square kilometers, of which two square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Washington County, Maryland, Berkeley County , Frederick County, Virginia, Hampshire County, and Allegany County, Maryland.

history

Morgan County was formed on February 9, 1820 from parts of Berkeley County and Hampshire County. It was named after Daniel Morgan , a member of the House of Representatives for Virginia and general in the American Revolutionary War and commander of the troops during the Whiskey Rebellion .

As of the 2000 census , Morgan County had 14,943 people in 6,145 households and 4,344 families. The population density was 25 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.30 percent white, 0.60 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.57 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.83 percent of the population.
