Greenbrier County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Lewisburg .

The county is located in southeastern West Virginia, bordering Virginia, and covers an area of 2,653 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Webster County , Pocahontas County , Bath County, Virginia, Alleghany County (Virginia), Monroe County , Summers County , Fayatte County, and Nicholas Counties .

Greenbrier County was formed as the original Free Territory county on October 20, 1777. It was named after the Greenbrier River .

According to the 2000 census , Greenbrier County had 34,453 people in 14,571 households and 9,922 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.23 percent white, 3.04 percent African American, 0.34 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.04 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.68 percent of the population.
Of the 14,571 households, 27.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.2 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers, 31.9 percent were non-families, 28.6 percent were single households, and 13.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.83 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.7 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over there were statistically 88.8 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,927 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,292. Males had a median income of $ 26,157 versus $ 19,620 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,247. 14.5 percent of families and 18.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 23.7 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 16.0 percent were people over 65 years of age.
