Hardy County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Moorefield .

The county lies in the northeast of West Virginia, on the east by Virginia and has an area of 1,514 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Hampshire County , Frederick County, Virginia, Shenandoah County (Virginia), Rockingham County (Virginia), Pendleton County, and Grant County .

history

Hardy County was formed on October 17, 1785 from parts of Hampshire County. It was named after Samuel Hardy , a lawyer and statesman from Virginia and a member of the Continental Congress .

According to the 2000 census , Hardy County had 12,669 people in 5,204 households and 3,564 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.87 percent white, 1.93 percent African American, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian and 0.23 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.67 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.66 percent of the population.

Of the 5,204 households, 29.6 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.1 percent were married couples living together, 8.6 percent were single mothers, 31.5 percent were non-families, 27.0 percent were single households, and 12.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.92 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.3 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 96.7 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,846 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,003. Males had a median income of $ 28,032 versus $ 18,798 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,859. 10.5 percent of families and 13.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 13.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 20.2 percent were people over 65 years of age.
