Doddridge County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is West Union .

The county is located in north-central West Virginia and covers an area of 830 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Wetzel County , Harrison County , Lewis County , Gilmer County , Ritchie County, and Tyler County .
history
Doddridge County was formed on February 4, 1845 from parts of Harrison, Lewis, Ritchie and Tyler Counties. It was named after Philip Doddridge (1773-1832), a Senator from Virginia and a member of the US House of Representatives .

As of the 2000 census , Doddridge County had 7,403 people in 2,845 households and 2,102 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.31 percent white, 0.27 percent African American, 0.31 percent Native American, 0.15 percent Asian and 0.14 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.82 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.57 percent of the population.
Of the 2,845 households, 32.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.3 percent were married couples living together, 10.3 percent were single mothers, 26.1 percent were non-families, 22.5 percent were single households, and 10.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 25.0 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 101.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 98.1 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,744 , and the median income for a family is $ 30,502. Males had a median income of $ 26,902 versus $ 20,250 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,507. 15.3 percent of families and 19.8 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 23.0 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 13.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
