Barbour County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Philippi .

The county is located in northeast West Virginia and has an area of ​​888 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Taylor County , Tucker County , Randolph County , Upshur County, and Harrison County .

history

Barbour County was formed on March 3, 1843 from parts of Harrison County, Lewis County and Randolph County. It was named after Philip Pendleton Barbour , a member of the House of Representatives , Justice of the United States Supreme Court, and brother of US Secretary of War James Barbour . On June 3, 1861, the first land battle of the American Civil War took place here with the battle near Philippi .
