Harrison County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Clarksburg .

The county is located in north-central West Virginia and covers an area of 1079 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Marion County , Taylor County , Upshur County , Lewis County , Doddridge County, and Wetzel County .
history
Harrison County was formed on May 3, 1784 from parts of Monongalia County. It was named after Benjamin Harrison V , a North American plantation owner and one of the leaders of the American independence movement . As a signatory to the United States Declaration of Independence , he is one of the Founding Fathers of the United States .

As of the 2000 census , Harrison County had 68,652 people in 27,867 households and 19,088 families. The population density was 64 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.55 percent white, 1.61 percent African American, 0.15 percent Native American, 0.59 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.86 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.96 percent of the population.
Of the 27,867 households, 29.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.3 percent were married couples living together, 11.4 percent were single mothers, 31.5 percent were non-families, 27.7 percent were single households and 13.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.94.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 91.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 88.2 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 30,562 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,870. Males had a median income of $ 30,721 versus $ 22,110 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,810. 13.6 percent of families and 17.2 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 24.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
