Pendleton County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Franklin .

The county is located in northeast West Virginia, borders Virginia and has an area of 1808 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Grant County , Hardy County , Rockingham County, Virginia, Augusta County, Virginia, Highland County (Virginia), Pocahontas County, and Randolph Counties .

Pendleton County became Augusta and Rockingham Counties in Virginia and Hardy County on December 4, 1787. It was named after Edmund Pendleton , a Virginia politician and judge and a participant in the American Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Pendleton County had 8,196 people in 3,350 households and 2,355 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.34 percent white, 2.12 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.18 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.28 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.77 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.89 percent of the population.
