Mineral County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Keyser .

The county is located in northeast West Virginia, borders Maryland to the north and northwest, and has an area of ​​852 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Allegany County, Maryland, Hampshire County , Grant County, and Garrett County, Maryland.

history

Mineral County was formed on February 1st from parts of Hampshire County. It was named after the rich iron ore deposits in this area. In 1669 John Lederer , a German physician and explorer of the Appalachians , received permission from Sir William Berkeley to enter what is now Mineral County, which he explored, along with other areas, from then on.

According to the 2000 census , Mineral County had 27,078 people in 10,784 households and 7,710 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.16 percent white, 2.55 percent African American, 0.11 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.76 percent were descended from two or more races. The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,149 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,866. Males had a median income of $ 32,337 versus $ 20,090 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,384. 11.5 percent of families and 14.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 21.1 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 11.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
