Roane County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Spencer .

The county is located in west central West Virginia and covers an area of ​​1,253 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Wirt County , Calhoun County , Clay County , Kanawha County, and Jackson County .

history

Roane County was formed on March 11, 1856 from parts of Gilmer County, Jackson County and Kanawha County. It was named after Spencer Roane , a Virginia judge .

According to the 2000 census , Roane County had 15,446 people in 6,161 households and 4,479 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer.
