Logan County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 36,743 residents and a population density of 33.3 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Logan .

The county is located in southwest West Virginia, about 35 km from the Kentucky border, and covers an area of 1,108 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Lincoln County , Boone County , Wyoming County, and Mingo County .
history
Logan County was formed on January 12, 1824 from parts of Cabell and Kanawha Counties and Giles and Tazewell Counties in Virginia. It was named after the chief Logan of the Mingo Indians, a subgroup of the Iroquois . In 1921, one of the largest armed uprisings in US history took place here, the Battle of Blair Mountain , when miners tried to obtain better working conditions.

According to the 2000 census , Logan County's population was 37,710. 552 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 14,880 households and 10,936 families. The population density was 32 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.33 percent white, 2.59 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.06 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.59 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.54 percent of the population.
Of the 14,880 households, 30.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.0 percent were married couples living together, 12.6 percent were single mothers, 26.5 percent were non-families, 24.0 percent were single households, and 11.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.95.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were statistically 91.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,603 , and the median income for a family is $ 29,072. Males had a median income of $ 31,515 versus $ 20,212 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,102. 20.8 percent of families and 24.1 percent of the population are below the poverty line. Of these, 34.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.4 percent were people over 65 years of age.
