Course of the Guyandotte River |
The Guyandotte River is a 267 km long left tributary of the Ohio River in the US state of West Virginia . The river drains part of the Allegheny Plateau between the catchment areas of the Kanawha River in the northeast and Twelvepole Creek and the Big Sandy River in the southwest.

The Guyandotte River is formed by the confluence of the Winding Gulf and Devils Fork at Amigo on the border of Raleigh and Wyoming Counties . It initially flows west through Wyoming and Mingo Counties , where it is dammed to RD Bailey Lake . Here he first makes a curve to the north, only to change direction again a little later in Logan County . It now flows northwest through Lincoln and Cabell Counties , where it joins the Ohio River 5 miles west of downtown Huntington .
The main tributaries are the Mud River near Barboursville , the Slab Fork in downtown Mullens and the Big Ugly Creek in Lincoln County.
Names
The river was named after the French term for the Wyandot Indians.
