Mingo County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Williamson .

The county is located in southwest West Virginia, bordering Kentucky, and has an area of ​​1,097 square kilometers, of which three square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lincoln County , Logan County , Wyoming County , McDowell County , Pike County, Kentucky, Martin County, Kentucky, and Wayne County .

history

Mingo County was formed on January 30, 1895 from parts of Logan County. It was named after the Mingo Indians, a branch of the Iroquois .

In the county is the city of Matewan, where a miners strike in 1921 led to the heaviest armed conflict within the United States since the Civil War.

As of the 2000 census , Mingo County had 28,253 people in 11,303 households and 8,217 families. The population density was 26 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.39 percent white, 2.34 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.06 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.74 percent were descended from two or more races.
