Summers County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . In 2010 , the county had 13,927 people and a population density of nearly 15 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Hinton .

The county is located in southern West Virginia, about 30 km from the Virginia border and has an area of 952 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Greenbrier County , Monroe County , Mercer County , Raleigh County, and Fayatte Counties .
history
Summers County was formed on February 27, 1871 from parts of Fayette, Greenbrier, Mercer and Monroe Counties. It was named after George W. Summers , a US lawyer.

As of the 2000 census , Summers County had 12,999 people. 157 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 5,530 households and 3,754 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 96.57 percent white, 2.15 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.79 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.55 percent of the population.
Of the 5,530 households, 25.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.8 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, 32.1 percent were non-families, 29.1 percent were single households and 14.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.32 and the average family size was 2.84 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 20.5 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.7 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 19.9 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 93.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 21,147 , and the median income for a family is $ 27,251. Males had a median income of $ 27,485 versus $ 18,491 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,419. 24.4 percent of the population and 20.3 percent of the population are below the poverty line. These included 34.3 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 14.5 percent of residents aged 65 and over.
