Marion County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Fairmont .

The county is located in northern West Virginia, about 22 miles from the Pennsylvania border, and covers an area of ​​807 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Monongalia County , Taylor County , Harrison County, and Wetzel County .

history

Marion County was formed on January 14, 1842 from parts of Harrison County and Monongalia County. It was named after as Swamp Fox known Francis Marion , a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and later brigadier general of the South Carolina militia in the Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Marion County had 56,598 people in 23,652 households and 15,515 families. The population density was 71 people per square kilometer.
