Marion County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Fairmont .

The county is located in northern West Virginia, about 22 miles from the Pennsylvania border, and covers an area of 807 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Monongalia County , Taylor County , Harrison County, and Wetzel County .

history

Marion County was formed on January 14, 1842 from parts of Harrison County and Monongalia County. It was named after as Swamp Fox known Francis Marion , a lieutenant colonel in the Continental Army and later brigadier general of the South Carolina militia in the Revolutionary War .

According to the 2000 census , Marion County had 56,598 people in 23,652 households and 15,515 families. The population density was 71 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.10 percent white, 3.22 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.41 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.13 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.93 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.70 percent of the population.

Of the 23,652 households, 26.0 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 51.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers, 34.4 percent were non-families, 28.9 percent were single households and 13.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.88 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 20.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 10.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 87.3 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,626 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,182. Males had a median income of $ 29,005 versus $ 21,100 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,246. 11.7 percent of families and 16.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 21.3 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
