The Marshall County is a county in the US state of West Virginia . At the 2010 census , the county had 33,107 residents and a population density of 41.6 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Moundsville .

The County is the southernmost of the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia and by the prolonged Mason - Dixon - line separated from the rest territory of the state.
It is bordered by Pennsylvania to the east and Ohio to the west , the border being formed by the Ohio River .
Marshall County covers an area of 809 square kilometers, of which 13 square kilometers are water.

history
Marshall County was formed on March 12, 1835 from parts of Ohio County. It was named after John Marshall (1755-1835), a former Secretary of State (1800-1801) and long-time presiding judge at the US Supreme Court (1801-1835).
