Taylor County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Grafton .

The county is located in northeastern West Virginia, about 50 km to the north from Pennsylvania , about 45 km to the east from Maryland , and has an area of 455 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Monongalia County , Preston County , Barbour County , Harrison County, and Marion County .

Taylor County was formed on January 19, 1844 from parts of Barbour County, Harrison County and Marion County. It was named after John Taylor , an American writer, politician and US senator .

As of the 2000 census , Taylor County had 16,089 people in 6,320 households and 4,487 families. The population density was 36 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.07 percent white, 0.83 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.06 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.59 percent of the population.
Of the 6,320 households, 30.9 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 56.4 percent were married couples living together, 10.9 percent were single mothers, 29.0 percent were non-families, 25.5 percent were single households and 12.6 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.95.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.9 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 24.9 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.9 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 27,124 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,222. Males had a median income of $ 29,349 versus $ 20,116 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,681. 15.3 percent of families and 20.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 27.0 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 16.1 percent were people over 65 years of age.
