Nicholas County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Summersville .

The county is located just southeast of the geographic center of West Virginia and has an area of ​​1,695 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Braxton County , Webster County , Greenbrier County , Fayatte County, and Clay County .

history

Nicholas County was formed on January 30, 1818 from parts of Kanawha County and Randolph County. It was named after Wilson Cary Nicholas , a US senator and governor of Virginia .

As of the 2000 census , Nicholas County had 26,562 people in 10,722 households and 7,762 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer.
