Nicholas County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Summersville .

The county is located just southeast of the geographic center of West Virginia and has an area of 1,695 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Braxton County , Webster County , Greenbrier County , Fayatte County, and Clay County .
history
Nicholas County was formed on January 30, 1818 from parts of Kanawha County and Randolph County. It was named after Wilson Cary Nicholas , a US senator and governor of Virginia .

As of the 2000 census , Nicholas County had 26,562 people in 10,722 households and 7,762 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.84 percent white, 0.05 percent African American, 0.24 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.55 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.48 percent of the population.
Of the 10,722 households, 30.7 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 58.7 percent were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers, 27.6 percent were non-families, 24.8 percent were single households, and 11.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.91 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.3 percent of residents under the age of 18, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.0 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.2 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,974 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,074. Males had a median income of $ 30,508 versus $ 17,964 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,207. 15.0 percent of families and 19.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 25.4 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 13.8 percent were people over 65 years of age.
