Pocahontas County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . At the 2010 census , the county had 8,719 people and a population density of 3.6 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Marlinton .

The county is located in east West Virginia, borders Virginia and has an area of 2,439 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Randolph County , Pendleton County , Highland County, Virginia, Bath County, Virginia, Greenbrier County, and Webster County .

Pocahontas

Pocahontas County was formed on December 21, 1821 from parts of Pendleton County, Randolph County and Bath County (Virginia). It was named after Pocahontas , the daughter of the Indian chief Powhatan-Sachem, who was the only "Indian princess" and ambassador of her "royal" father Powhatan to be received at court.

Pocahontas County had a population of 9,131 people as of the 2000 census . Of these, 298 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 3,835 households and 2,527 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.38 percent white, 0.78 percent African American, 0.07 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian and 0.05 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.58 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.43 percent of the population.

Of the 3,835 households, 25.8 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 53.9 percent were married couples living together, 7.9 percent were single mothers, 34.1 percent were non-families, 29.6 percent were single households and 14.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.83 people.

For the entire county, the population was composed of 20.9 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females there were 106.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 103.6 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 26,401 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,511. Males had a median income of $ 26,173 versus $ 16,780 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,384. 12.7 percent of families and 17.1 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 20.2 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.6 percent were people over 65 years of age.
