The Greenbrier River is a right tributary of the New River in the southwest of the US state West Virginia and has a length of 261 km.
About the New River, Kanawha River and Ohio River it is part of the catchment area of the Mississippi River and drains an area of 4287 km².
The Greenbrier River has its origin in Durbin through the confluence of the East Fork Greenbrier River and West Fork Greenbrier River, both of which are only short rivers and have their source at over 1000 m above sea level and run their entire length in the north of Pocahontas County . Below Durbin, the river generally follows a south-southwest flow direction through Pocahontas, Greenbrier and Summers Counties , passing through the settlements of Cass , Stony Bottom , Marlinton , Falling Spring , Ronceverte and Alderson before flowing into the New River at Hinton .
The Greenbrier River is the only major non- dammed river in West Virginia and is heavily used for recreational and recreational purposes. Its upper course lies within the Monongahela National Forest , and is accompanied by the Greenbrier River Trail for 124 km between Cass and North Caldwell .
