The Greenbrier River Skirmish , also known as the Camp Bartow Skirmish , was a Civil War battle during operations in western Virginia . It took place on October 3, 1861 near the Greenbrier River .

After the victory at Cheat Mountain , the troops of the Northerners deployed in western Virginia intended to drive the Confederate units from the area of the future state of West Virginia . On the morning of October 3, Brigadier General Joseph J. Reynolds personally conducted an armed reconnaissance with 2 brigades from the Cheat Mountain Summit Fort east to attack and destroy the Confederates at Camp Bartow.

Reynolds managed to break into the Confederate security. From 7 a.m. the US artillery fought a four-hour duel with the opposing artillery. During this duel, Reynolds attacked first the left flank and then the right flank of the Confederates. However, both attacks were repulsed by the well-trained and disciplined soldiers of Brigadier General Henry R. Jackson . Around noon, Reynolds stopped his attacks and evaded the Cheat Mountain Summit Fort .

Despite this successful defense against the attacks, the Confederates evacuated Camp Bartow in November in order to repel attacks by Northerners from the more favorably located Camp Allegheny .
