Wirt County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Elizabeth .

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of West Virginia and covers an area of ​​608 square kilometers, of which five square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Wood County , Ritchie County , Calhoun County , Roane County, and Jackson County .

history

Host County was formed on January 19, 1848 from parts of Jackson County and Wood County. It was named after William Wirt , a North American author, statesman, and attorney general.

As of the 2000 census , there were 5,873 people in 2,284 households and 1,699 families in Host County. The population density was 10 people per square kilometer.
