Monroe County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Union .

The county is located in southeastern West Virginia, bordering Virginia, and has an area of 1,227 square kilometers, of which one square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Greenbrier County , Alleghany County, Virginia, Craig County, Virginia, Giles County, Virginia, Mercer County, and Summers County .

Monroe County was formed on January 14, 1799 from parts of Greenbrier County. It was named after James Monroe , the fifth President of the United States.

According to the 2000 census , Monroe County had 14,583 people in 5,447 households and 3,883 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.67 percent white, 5.98 percent African American, 0.23 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.03 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.92 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.49 percent of the population.
Of the 5,447 households, 29.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 59.8 percent were married couples living together, 7.9 percent were single mothers, 28.7 percent were non-families, 25.8 percent were single households and 13.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.88 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 20.1 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.1 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 79.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 73.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 27,575 USD , and the median income for a family was 35,299 USD. Males had a median income of $ 25,643 versus $ 22,104 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,435. 12.6 percent of families and 16.2 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 21.3 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 12.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
