Braxton County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Sutton .
geography
The county is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of West Virginia and has an area of 1,337 square kilometers, of which seven square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lewis County , Webster County , Nicholas County , Clay County , Calhoun County, and Gilmer County .
history
Braxton County was formed on January 15, 1836 from parts of Kanawha County, Lewis County and Nicholas County. It was named after Carter Braxton , a member of the House of Representatives and a signatory to the United States Declaration of Independence .

As of the 2000 census , Braxton County had 14,702 people in 5,771 households and 4,097 families. The population density was 11 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.02 percent white, 0.69 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.11 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.08 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.71 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.44 percent of the population.
Of the 5,771 households, 30.3 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 57.3 percent were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers, 29.0 percent were non-families, 25.2 percent were single households, and 12.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.8 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 102.6 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 103.0 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,412 , and the median income for a family is $ 29,133. Males had a median income of $ 27,560 versus $ 17,778 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,349. 17.9 percent of families and 22.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 27.9 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 13.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
