Boone County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Madison .

The county is located in southwest West Virginia and covers an area of 1,303 square kilometers, one square kilometer of which is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Kanawha County , Raleigh County , Wyoming County , Logan County, and Lincoln County .
history
Boone County was formed on March 11, 1847 from parts of Cabell County, Kanawha County and Nicholas County. It was named after Daniel Boone , a US pioneer and border guard who opened up the so-called Wilderness Trail and founded the town of Boonesborough in Kentucky .

In 1960 the Fork Creek Wildlife Management Area was established near Nellis . The size of the protected area for wild animals was 28.32 km². After the area was sold to the Island Creek Coal Company , the area's protection status was revoked on July 3, 2008, especially as the access road to the Company's mine cut through the protected area.

According to the 2000 census , Boone County had 25,535 people in 10,291 households and 7,460 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.53 percent white, 0.65 percent African American, 0.12 percent Native American, 0.07 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.07 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.54 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.46 percent of the population.
Of the 10,291 households, 31.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.5 percent were married couples living together, 10.5 percent were single mothers, 27.5 percent were non-families, 24.6 percent were single households and 11.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.92 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.2 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.0 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.3 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 92.5 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,669 , and the median income for a family is $ 31,999. Males had a median income of $ 34,931 versus $ 19,607 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,453. 18.3 percent of families and 22.0 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 27.9 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 13.9 percent were people over 65 years of age.

Boone County is divided into four parishes, one city and three towns . For statistical purposes, the US Census Bureau maintains five census-designated places that are subordinate to the county and are not self-governing. Like the Unincorporated Communities, these are unincorporated areas.
