Fayette County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Fayetteville .

The county is located in south-central West Virginia and has an area of 1731 square kilometers, of which eleven square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Nicholas County , Greenbrier County , Summers County , Raleigh County, and Kanawha County .
history
Fayette County was formed on February 28, 1831 from parts of Greenbrier, Kanawha, Logan and Nicholas Counties. It was named after Marie-Joseph Motier, Marquis de La Fayette , a French general and politician who took part in the American Revolutionary War on the colonist side and played an important role in the French Revolution .

Fayette County's population was 47,579 as of the 2000 census . Of these, 1,977 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 18,945 households and 13,128 families. The population density was 28 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 92.74 percent white, 5.57 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.93 percent were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.68 percent of the population.
Of the 18,945 households, 29.0 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 52.1 percent were married couples living together, 13.2 percent were single mothers, 30.7 percent were non-families, 26.9 percent were single households, and 13.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 9.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.1 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 16.4 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 98.2 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.7 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 24,788 , and the median income for a family is $ 30,243. Males had a median income of $ 28,554 versus $ 18,317 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,809. 18.2 percent of families and 21.7 percent of the population are below the poverty line. These included 31.9 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 13.7 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over.
