Fayetteville is a city and the county seat of Fayette County in the US state West Virginia with 2890 inhabitants (2012).

Fayetteville is 60 kilometers southeast of Charleston . The US Highway 19 runs through the town, the New River affected him in the Northeast. The New River Gorge Bridge , a steel arch bridge, spans the New River near Fayetteville.
history
The place was first to Abraham Vandal, war veterans and local farmers Vandalia named, but was about 1837 in honor of Gilbert du Motier , a French general and politician who at the American Revolutionary War , took part in Fayetteville renamed.
Since there are numerous and high-quality, low-sulfur coal deposits in the area , the main livelihood of the population at the beginning of the 1900s was coal mining. However, due to the increasing use of other energy sources, the coal boom subsided significantly after the end of the Second World War . Today the city is also active in tourism and organizes rafting tours on the New River as well as mountain bike tours in the mountainous surroundings.
The New River Gorge Bridge, the Fayette County Courthouse and the Fayetteville Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

In 2012 a population of 2890 people was determined, which corresponds to an increase of 4.9% compared to 2000. The mean age in 2012 was 44.4 years, slightly higher than West Virginia's 42.6 years. 12.2% of today's residents can be traced back to immigrants from Germany . Other significant immigrant groups from Europe during the early days of the town came from England ( 11.8%) and Ireland ( 12.6%) .
