The Ohio County is a county in the US state of West Virginia . At the 2010 census , the county had 44,443 residents and a population density of 161.6 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Wheeling .

geography

The county is located almost in the far north of West Virginia in the Northern Panhandle , borders Pennsylvania to the east and Ohio to the west , the border being formed by the Ohio River . Ohio County was formed on October 7, 1776 from parts of West Augusta District. It was named after the Ohio River .

The first administrative seat was from 1777 to 1797 in West Liberty , which was then still called Black's Cabin . In 1797 the administration was moved to Wheeling, where it is still today.

In 1861, the Wheeling Convention was held in Wheeling , a series of gatherings of representatives of the counties who opposed Virginia's apostasy from the United States. This was the hour of birth of the then newly emerging state of West Virginia.

The racial the population was composed of 93.2 percent white, 3.7 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.8 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.8 percent of the population.
