The county is located north of the geographic center of West Virginia and covers an area of ​​881 square kilometers with no significant body of water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Doddridge County , Lewis County , Braxton County , Calhoun County, and Ritchie County .

history

Gilmer County was formed on February 3, 1845 from parts of Kanawha County and Lewis County. It was named after Thomas Walker Gilmer , a member of the US Congress , Secretary of the Navy and Governor of Virginia .
