Grant County is a county in the state of West Virginia in the United States . The county seat is Petersburg .

The county is located in northeast West Virginia, borders Maryland to the northwest and has an area of 1,244 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Mineral Counties , Hardy Counties , Pendleton Counties , Tucker Counties , and Garrett Counties , Maryland.
history
Grant County was formed on February 14, 1866 from parts of Hardy County. It was named after Ulysses S. Grant , Commander in Chief of the Union Armies in the American Civil War and 18th President of the United States.

According to the 2000 census , Grant County had 11,299 people in 4,591 households and 3,273 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.33 percent white, 0.67 percent African American, 0.26 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.13 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.45 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.55 percent of the population.
Of the 4,591 households, 30.2 percent had children and adolescents under the age of 18 living with them. 59.5 percent were married couples living together, 8.2 percent were single mothers, 28.7 percent were non-families, 24.5 percent were single households, and 11.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.87 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 22.7 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 15.3 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.7 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were 94.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 28,916 USD , and the median income for a family was 33,813 USD. Males had a median income of $ 24,796 versus $ 18,354 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,696. 12.6 percent of families and 16.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 21.0 percent were children or adolescents under the age of 18 and 18.7 percent were people over 65 years of age.
