The Garrett County is the west-most county in the US state of Maryland . The county seat is Oakland .

The county is separated from Pennsylvania to the north by the Mason-Dixon Line ; to the south and west it borders West Virginia . Garrett County covers an area of 1,699 square kilometers; 21 square kilometers (1.21 percent) of this is water.

Garrett County was formed in 1872 from parts of Allegany County. It was named after John Work Garrett (1820-1884), president of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (1856-1984).
Due to its historical significance, a bridge has the status of a National Historic Landmark , the Casselman Bridge, National Road . 19 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of November 14, 2017).
Demographic data
As of the 2000 census , Garrett County had 29,846 people in 11,476 households and 8,354 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 98.8 percent white, 0.4 percent African American, 0.1 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and 0.1 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.4 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.4 percent of the population.
Of the 11,476 households, 32.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.7 percent were married couples living together, 8.4 percent were single mothers, and 27.2 percent were non-families. 23.5 percent of all households were single households and 10.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.0 people.
25.1 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.8 percent between 18 and 24, 27.6 percent between 25 and 44, 24.6 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 14.9 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 38 years. Statistically, for every 100 females there were 97.2 males and for every 100 females aged 18 or over there were 93.8 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 32,238 USD , for a family is 37,811 USD. Males had a median income of $ 29,469 versus $ 20,673 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,219. About 9.8 percent of families and 13.3 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
