The Caroline County is a county in the US state of Maryland . This makes the county one of the least populous in Maryland. The county seat is Denton .

The county is in the interior of the Delmarva Peninsula on the border with Delaware and has an area of 844 square kilometers; 15 square kilometers (1.82 percent) of it is water. Caroline County is bordered by the following counties:

history
Caroline County was formed in 1773 from parts of Dorchester and Quenn Anne's Counties. It was named after Caroline Eden , the wife of the last English colonial governor.

As of the 2000 census , Caroline County had 29,772 people in 11,097 households and 8,156 families. The population density was 93 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 81.7 percent white, 14.8 percent African American, 0.4 percent Native American, 0.5 percent Asian and 1.3 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.3 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.7 percent of the population.
Of the 11,097 households, 34.8 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 54.3 percent were married couples living together, 13.6 percent were single mothers, and 26.5 percent were non-families. 21.5 percent of all households were single households and 9.4 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.03.
26.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.7 percent between 18 and 24, 28.9 percent between 25 and 44, 23.1 percent between 45 and 64 years old, and 13.5 percent were 65 years or older . The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 95.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 91.7 males.
The average income of a household amounted to 38,832 USD , for a family is 44,825 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,119 versus $ 21,915 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,275. About 9.0 percent of families and 11.7 percent of the population were below the poverty line .
